The Ice Man

We all know Wim Hof, and for great reason, he has an incredible and fun approach to the topic. What many don’t know is that he has overcome tremendous pain with the cold, which is why he is all that he is — he likes to share what saved him.

His method is based on a 3-pillar framework, heavily studied and practiced, which includes: breathwork, cold exposure, and commitment.

The Thermalist

A more feminine and soft, yet effective and easily applicable is the body of work of Dr Susanna Soeberg.

This conversation is incredible, on the Huberman Lab Podcast.

She also has a very informative substack, the Thermalist, and book, Winter Swimming.

Tools for Success

You really only need a cold shower, a cold day, or a bowl of icy cold water to get some of the benefits of cold exposure, but if you’re going to dip in open water or in cold plunge tank, there are some products that make it all a bit more smooth.

  • Ice bath (get the cover, use code katherine22 to get the discount): https://nurecover.com/discount/KATHERINE22

  • Toe booties — great for plunge tanks.

  • Neoprene booties or gloves if you’ll be in open water, especially if it has the potential for rocky bottom. Cold toes HURT when stubbed.
